FAQs

  • Is there an age limit?
    • While there is no age limit, the student must be physically able to shoot a bow safely (either their own or one of our rentals) and capable of listening to the instructor. Generally, we find that kids can safely start between the ages of 6 and 8 based on size and strength.
  • Who will I be working with?
    • We have a growing team of coaches here at OPAS. Our goal is to fit you with the best coach for your needs, so one will be assigned based on your equipment and goals. Any special requests will be taken into consideration, but can not be guaranteed.
  • Who are lessons designed for?
    • Our coaches design a program fit specifically for the student. While there is a basic progression in archery, the student’s goal(s) will be the number one priority. While lessons are open to anyone, only those who put in the effort to practice on their own will truly see the improvements they are looking for.
  • Do I need my own equipment?
    • While having your own equipment is preferred, it is by no means required and we have plenty of rental bows you can use during lessons. Personal equipment is recommended because practicing between sessions is essential to improving as an archer. We understand that archery can be an expensive hobby and therefore we know not everyone will have their own equipment.
  • How do I know how often I should take lessons?
    • Ideally, lessons are held once per week. We know that life can make scheduling difficult, that’s why scheduling is always to your needs. If you don’t get to practice often, a longer time between lessons may be more helpful.
  • How long should each coaching session last?
    • Most archers spend an hour with their coach during each session, but we offer four different lengths and recommend them for different types of archers. ½ hour sessions are designed for younger children that may struggle to focus for a full hour, students with tight schedules, or those who are brand new to archery and don’t have the endurance to shoot for a full hour yet. Those who opt for bi-weekly sessions or need a little more time to learn a concept may benefit from our 1 ½ hour lessons. Rarely are 2 hour sessions required, but they are an option for students who choose monthly lessons or are a very high level shooter requiring extended time for scoring rounds.
  • What is the difference between short-term and long-term coaching?
    • The only difference between short-term and long-term coaching is how long you plan to take lessons. There is no standing commitment for either but they give the coach a better idea of how to plan around your goals. If you just bought equipment and want enough knowledge to properly begin your archery journey, short-term coaching is a great option. Long-term coaching is designed for students who plan to compete in tournaments now or in the future. If you are unsure of which to choose, opt for short-term coaching - as it is much easier to extend a coaching plan than shorten one. We also have a single lesson option for those who just need a quick check-up after getting back into archery.
  • What are different goals I should have and how should I set them?
    • Basic categories of goals are going to be form and scores downrange, either short-term, long-term, or both. While you may have goals to achieve a certain score, most of the time it relates back to correcting something in your form.
  • What can I expect at my first session?
    • While it may differ coach to coach, in general, they will review your shooting experience and goals with you. Then they will likely watch you shoot for a little bit before making any changes. Your first lesson is generally about learning who you are as an archer and gauging how lessons are going to run moving forward.
  • Why should I take lessons?
    • While some upgrades in equipment can make you shoot better, correct form is often the most important factor in shooting well. Lessons are an investment into your archery career. If you set a goal and achieve it, you don’t need to continue lessons - they are individualized for a reason.
  • Is there an option for groups?
    • We believe that 1-on-1 instruction is the best way for the student to improve. It is difficult for a coach to focus on multiple students at a time while still providing constructive feedback. If you are interested in group lessons please email or call for pricing and additional information.
